HISTORY
Before the establishing of Sasan Gir National Park, It was known by Gir forest that was operated by British Government before 1947. British’s troopers hunted to Asiatic lions and other animals in the forest and the lions were left 20 only during 1913, then Nawab of Junagadh and British’s officers ran a campaign to conserve the lions and entire wildlife sanctuary and they restricted hunting for everyone and provided lots of facilities to animals so that they can expand their population.
After that it was managed by the Indian government and Gujarat government developed numerous options to make the Gir wildlife more safe for wild animals such as they established lion reserve area in 1965, this lion reserve area is scattered on 259 km2 that is small part of entire Gir Forest. This lion reserve area is known by Gir National Park and forest department built so many small water pounds here, planted many trees, give them bigger area in order to animals can move easily on their land. Even, forest department taught to native people regarding importance of nature and told them role of each plant and animals in our life cycle and so on. Now adays 550 lions are flourishing in the national park and the total populations are 1,60,000+ which is better as compare to historic data.
Presently Gujarat forest department is providing a chance to explore Gir Safari park which is believed lion reserve area. Forest department is managing wildlife safari permits that help to go into the forest with a open jeep that you will have to Book Online through Gir Eco Tourism's website.
